Thailand will hold general election in July

Thailand

has been without a fully functioning government or parliament since December. Election Commission secretary general Puchong Nutrawong said the new voting date had been decided during talks with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Wednesday. 

 Ms Yingluck to resign to make way for an unelected "people's council" to oversee political reforms before elections are held. Ms Yingluck is pushing for new polls as soon as possible to shore up her position in the face of a series of legal challenges that could force her from office.

 She is accused of dereliction of duty linked to a loss-making rice subsidy scheme and the improper transfer of a senior civil servant. she was worried about a looming charter court ruling in the Thawil Pliensri transfer case that could threaten her future as prime minister and that of the entire cabinet. Last month the Supreme Administrative Court ruled that the transfer of Mr Thawil as National Security Council secretary-general was unlawful and ordered him to be reinstated. Mr Thawil was removed in September 2011, paving the way for then police chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree to replace him and Pol Gen Priewpan Damapong, a relative of Ms Yingluck, to succeed Pol Gen Wichean as police chief.

Speaking to reporters at the Defence Ministry Thursday, Ms Yingluck said she will consult with her lawyers whether she will testify in person to the court on May 6.''I am worried about this issue as the Supreme Administrative Court has already ruled on the case. But I will do my best to clarify the matter,'' Ms Yingluck said, adding that she did not want to speculate on the future. The prime minister also said she hoped the charter court will rule on the case based on the facts and the rule of law.Charter court spokesman Pimon Thampitakpong said that on May 6 the court is expected to either fix the date for the ruling on the case or seek additional documents if evidence is still incomplete.Meanwhile, former Democrat prime minister Chuan Leekpai said the problems plaguing the country now had to do with the government's mishandling of policies and using unlawful approaches in administration.Speaking at the 16th anniversary of the Constitutional Court under the theme of "Political reform under the rule of law,'' he said the southern insurgent violence and judicial killings were cases in point."The rule of law is a part of good governance. Adhering to the law to administer the country will bring peace to the country. However, there will be new problems if the government resorts to unlawful approaches (in dealing with national administration),'' he said, alleging that on many occasions, the rule of law has been violated.The government has not put the right people in the right job, he added.Borwornsak Uwanno, secretary-general of the King Prajadhipok's Institute, said the Constitutional Court should have the authority to decide on its own what section of the charter to alter, if such content warrants amending.He stressed upholding the rule of law was imperative in allowing the country to progress and anyone who undermines the rule of law also destroys democracy.National reform should cast aside populist policies and change them so they are more in tune with state welfare programmes since they use state budget and they incur debt burdens to be passed on to future governments, Mr Borwornsak said.He added the country's current tax structure should also be changed.Since November, Thailand has been shaken by months of political violence that has left 25 people dead and hundreds wounded, including many anti-government protesters, in grenade attacks and shootings. The country has been bitterly divided since a coup in 2006 ousted Ms Yingluck's brother Thaksin Shinawatra as prime minister. He still wields huge influence from his self-exile in Dubai, where he lives to avoid prison for a corruption conviction.

He travelled to New York for treatment, temporarily leaving the post, returning to see Barcelona win the league title with a record 100 points.
As Barcelona's form had dipped and criticism had emerged at the end of that season, when

Some of this works and some of it doesn’t. But what keeps Revolver Rani together are the performances and the sly humour. I particularly enjoyed the two testosterone-filled duffer politicians whose only aim is to kill Alka. If you like uplifting, cheerful cinema, then this isn’t the movie for you. But if, like me, you can enjoy bad people doing bad things, then Revolver Rani will be fun.

ARD/ZDF to block out World Cup on Hot Bird in germany

German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF will not broadcast the games of the Football World Cup 2014 on Eutelsat’s Hot Bird satellite system at 13° East due to rights restrictions.

The broadcasters’ live coverage of all 64 World Cup matches will only be transmitted on Astra (19.2° East) which has a smaller footprint than Hot Bird and acts as the main DTH platform serving domestic satellite households in Germany.

“The contractual agreement with FIFA does not enable ZDF to distribute the coverage on Eutelsat Hot Bird,” a ZDF spokesman told Broadband TV News. He added that no decision has been made yet which programmes will replace ZDF’s World Cup transmissions on the Eutelsat satellite.

A spokesperson from SWR, the ARD affiliate handling the World Cup coverage, told Broadband TV News that, according to the present state of knowledge, ARD will only distribute the World Cup matches on Astra, like it has been the case at the previous World Cup four years ago. SWR expects to make a firm statement on this matter in mid-May 2014.

The rights issue arises from Hot Bird’s large footprint through which ARD and ZDF reach, for example, expats, hotels, embassies and army troops in remote areas not served by Astra. The wide-beam transponders used by the broadcasters also cover the Middle East and Northern Africa where pay-TV broadcaster beIN Sports from the Al-Jazeera group has obtained the exclusive live broadcast rightsfrom FIFA. With the removal of their unencrypted World Cup coverage, ARD and ZDF avoid a legal dispute with the rights holder in these territories.

Violence broke out after the police detained AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal during his campaign in Narendra Modi’s territory, Gujarat. The ruling INC, which won a comfortable majority in the previous elections, is being seen as the weakest candidate this time around. The country has evidently been gripped by the ‘Namo’ fever.

The INC has withered away in Andhra Pradesh on account of a political split. Charges of corruption, indecisiveness, weak leadership and bad state of economy have created a huge anti-incumbent atmosphere. They have also lost their alliances in the state of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)

While the BJP, which gained a majority in three states during the recent state assembly elections, seems confident during public addresses, the party is unable to handle its own senior members and their frustration against the rise of Namo – who is supposedly running a one-man show.

Internal bickering is still rampant in the BJP offices. The BJP, which came to power in the state of Bihar during the previous elections, suffered a setback when its major alliance parted ways with them. In Karnataka, the party is still reeling under internal imbalances.

The instability of these major players has given regional and smaller parties an opportunity to form a Third Front. This idea has been tried in India a few times before. However, presently, no single party in the Third Front is capable of winning a reasonable number of seats in the parliament to form a government.

The emergence of the AAP in Delhi has already produced shockwaves within BJP and INC in Delhi’s recent state elections. Though the party barely lasted for 50 days – with outside support from INC – AAP still has the potential to be the party that spoils election figures for key players, like the BJP.

These elections, due to their uncertainty, have the potential to let smaller, less popular parties have their say too. To win, a party would need to have 272 seats in the Lok Sabha, and keeping the statistics in mind, the possibility of a coalition is also very real.

For a 21-year-old young enthusiast like myself, and many others around me, it is going to be interesting how these parties try and influence the minds of a tech-savvy generation that is ready to bash them immediately on social media for any mistakes they make.

We are tired of both the INC and the BJP, where one party is engulfed in corruption charges and doesn’t have any credibility whereas the other is too busy promoting the ideology of one man over other party members. It is also a risk to choose BJP because of their communal ideology.

Amidst all this, the Kejriwal-led AAP seems to provide the perfect model of a revolutionary party, with its hard hitting stance on anti-corruption. The party also bears an image of secularism, which might attract young and educated people into the fray. The AAP mellowed itself down when Kejriwal had to resign as the chief minister of Delhi, within 50 days of coming to power. This clearly did not do well among many of his supporters.

However, he has ricocheted back into the game, as his party has fielded some famous and visionary leaders for the general elections. Also, with Kejriwal standing against Modi, no one can predict who will actually win.

India is in desperate need for change right now. Though it is tough to predict which party will gain maximum seats, one fact that remains without doubt is that the political trend has to change.

This is going to be one of the most uncertain elections ever but we have tried and tested all these old parties, it is time for us to give fresh faces a chance.

By report of Indian Express, the retired school teacher Jashodaben, 62 was married to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi when she was 17 – and separated after about three years claimed they were never divorced and that she spends much of her time now in spiritual quest.

Mrs Modi, according to the Indian Express, gets a monthly pension of Rs14,000, and lives mostly with a brother and spends much of her time in prayer. In Ahmedabad to visit her extended family, she agreed to be interviewed by The Indian Express but refused to be photographed.

“We married when I was 17... I had quit studies once I went to his place and remember him saying he wanted me to pursue my education. He would mostly talk to me about completing my education. Initially he took interest in talking to me and even in the affairs of the kitchen,” said Jashodaben.

Asked if she was asked to keep a low profile, she said: “We have never been in touch and we parted on good terms as there were never any fights between us. I will not make up things that are not true. In three years, we may have been together for all of three months. There has been no communication from his end to this day.”

Mrs Modi said she reads everything that she can get on her husband and is confident about him becoming the Prime Minister of India. 

Did Mr Modi tell her he was leaving her? “He told me once that ‘I will be travelling across the country and will go as and where I please; what will you do following me?’ When I came to Vadnagar to live with his family, he told me ‘why did you come to your in-laws’ house when you are still so young, you must instead focus on pursuing your studies.'

The decision to leave was my own and there was never any conflict between us. He never spoke to me about the RSS or about his political leanings. When he told me he would be moving around the country as he wished, I told him I would like to join him.

However, on many occasions when I went to my in-laws’ place, he would not be present and he stopped coming there. He used to spend a lot of time in RSS shakhas. So I too stopped going there after a point and I went back to my father's house.”

Was she Mr Modi's legally wedded wife, she was asked. “Every time people take his name, I am also mentioned somewhere, even though in the background. Did you not come all the way and look all over, to find me and come and speak to me? If I was not his wife, would you have come to speak to me? she quipped. 

“I don't feel bad, because I know that he is doing so due to destiny and bad times. In such situations he has to say such things and also has to lie. I don't see my situation as being bad because I feel, in a way, my luck has improved too.”

Did she ever consider getting married again? “After this experience, I don't think I want to. My heart is not into it,” Mrs Modi concludes.
